| At some point many years ago (soon after the Challenger disaster which
occurred on January 28, 1986. I remember being at lunch with my friend and
coworker at the time Phil Rapuano when it happened.) I decided to build a 1/72
scale model of the Space Shuttle Launch Complex. I got married and put the
model away for about 10 years. Well now its many years later and I still have
not completed it. Its grown to over 4 feet high and takes up a 4x8 sheet of plywood to display it. It has been designed totally from pictures i have collected over past few years and from a couple of trips down there....I hate busses they move to fast to get good pictures. When I first started this project I just intended it to be a quick non-detailed representation. Then I got carried away, but due to some of my initial measurements taken from the 1/144 Revell kit, some of the pieces are not exactly to scale (oh well, maybe i'll fix them as i go along). I have taken some liberties in the design using my imagination as to what a specific area looked like but am trying to be as realistic as possible. Everything has been made from Plastruct ABS and Styrene and Evergreen Styrene and bonded with Tenax-R7 (I hate methylene chloride) . The Mobile Launch Platform is constructed of wood and ABS to give it some support. |
